Can you tell us the story behind the founding of Condado Portucalense and its early days in the Lisbon Wine Region?

Founded in 1983, Condado Portucalense initially focused on exports; the company soon established a strong domestic presence, becoming known for its exceptional wines and support for local agriculture. What inspired the company’s initial focus on the export market, and how did it evolve to establish a strong presence in the national market?

Condado Portucalense initially focused on exports to introduce the quality and uniqueness of Lisbon Wine Region wines to international markets. This strategy allowed the company to establish a strong foundation and gain experience in the competitive global wine industry. As exports grew, the company shifted toward building a presence in the domestic market, using its reputation for quality to cater to evolving Portuguese tastes. By supporting local agriculture and producers, Condado Portucalense crafted wines that resonated with Portuguese consumers while maintaining global standards, strengthening its roots at home and abroad.

Since starting with a focus on exports, how have you seen the international market for Portuguese wines evolve?

Since focusing on exports, we’ve seen Portuguese wines evolve from niche offerings to internationally recognized products. Growing appreciation for Portugal’s unique grape varieties, terroirs, and quality has fueled this shift. Markets like China have shown strong growth, while Cape Verde continues to have strong demand due to cultural ties. Portuguese wines are now gaining recognition in global competitions and appearing more on international shelves. This evolution reflects changing consumer preferences and successful industry efforts in marketing and quality. At Condado Portucalense, we’re proud to contribute to raising the global profile of Portuguese wines.

What differences do you observe between the preferences of national and international consumers?

National consumers prefer wines that reflect Portugal's winemaking traditions, often gravitating toward familiar profiles and indigenous varieties like Touriga Nacional and Arinto. They also appreciate regional authenticity and wines that pair well with traditional Portuguese dishes. International consumers, however, are more curious about unique, lesser-known varieties and embrace the diversity of Portuguese wines. There's growing demand for bold, full-bodied reds and refreshing whites, particularly from regions like Alenquer, along with increasing interest in sustainable and organically produced wines.

Are there any particular trends or shifts in consumer behavior that are currently influencing your winemaking or marketing strategies?

Sustainability and authenticity are key trends shaping our winemaking and marketing strategies. Consumers are increasingly prioritizing eco-friendly practices and transparency in production. The demand for high-quality, small-batch wines is also on the rise. Additionally, the growing interest of younger consumers in wine has led us to adapt our branding and marketing, focusing on fresh, engaging storytelling and digital outreach to connect with this demographic.

Your company places emphasis on economic and social development in the region. Can you share some examples of your contributions to the local community?

At Condado Portucalense, our commitment to the region extends beyond winemaking to supporting the local community. We work closely with local farmers, ensuring fair pricing for their grapes and offering ongoing support to improve vineyard management. Our acquisition of cooperatives in Sobral de Monte Agraço, Bombarral, and Alcanhões has revitalized these facilities, protecting jobs and fostering economic stability.

What do you see as the biggest opportunities for Portuguese wines in the global market over the next decade?

The global market offers significant opportunities for Portuguese wines, particularly in showcasing unique grape varieties and terroirs. With growing interest in authentic, high-quality wines, Portuguese offerings are well-positioned to appeal to this demand. Sustainability also presents a major opportunity, as consumers increasingly seek environmentally responsible options. By highlighting our eco-friendly practices, we can meet this growing demand. Additionally, utilizing digital platforms for direct-to-consumer sales and storytelling about our winemaking traditions will help expand our global reach.

Are there any upcoming projects or innovations from Condado Portucalense that you’re excited to share?

We are excited to continue producing new vintages each year, always with the goal of elevating the quality of our wines. Our commitment to innovation and improvement drives us to exceed customer expectations and expand our market presence.
