28/01/2020 Out with the old, in with the new - here are 5 wine trends to watch out for in 2020.

2019 was a big year for wine. Trends such as canned wines, vegan wines, low abv wines, sustainable packaging and more, took the stage last year. With the new year dawning upon us, there are new trends emerging from the wine grounds, and some are being carried over from last year.

As a wine brand/producer, it’s important for you to stay up to date with the trends, so you know how to deplete your wines accordingly.

Let’s take a look at 5 trends to watch out for in 2020.

1. Pink Fizz

Rosé and Prosecco both made a huge impact on the wine industry in 2019, and 2020 is going to see more of both - and at a point even them together in one bottle. Consumers are still rushing to racks for bubbles - not only for occasions, but even just on a night out. The UK wine supplier Bibendum, in its own 2020 trend report predicted that bottles of prosecco and rosé mix could be hitting the shelves before the end of the year.

The prosecco x rosé trend would also be an exposure to bringing in more premiumization, which is what consumers are going to be gravitating towards this year. So if you have a bubbly rosé, then you’re definitely going to do well.

2. Wine packaging set to emerge

Packaging is one of the first things that consumers look at when picking a wine. Brands are noticing this, and are evolving their packaging methods. Sustainable packaging is going to be a big thing in 2020. With global warming awareness taking over, and the need to ‘save the planet’, wine brands are getting into eco friendly, biodegradable, sustainable packaging. Companies such as Garcon Wines (which is a sustainable wine packaging solutions firm) are emerging to help brands build sustainable packaging for their wines.

Canned wines also seem to be in the spotlight when it comes to packaging. Consumers love things when they are easy, and cans are easy to pick and ready to drink from. Brands such as Babe wines, Beach Juice, André Brut and others are bringing their canned wines in front of the market, bigger and better. Other brands are also investing in building canned packaging for their wines.

3. E-commerce goes for the prize

With consumers turning to online shopping, wine sales are becoming more and more through the internet. People are more interested in purchasing their wines online now. With augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) taking over, wine brands are trying to create an online presence, that provides consumers a life like experience while shopping online.

Most wine brands are going to make their wines available online this year, making it easier for consumers to purchase them. Websites will be supported with AR and VR, giving the consumer all the information they might need, in the most interactive way possible. Wine labels are also going to evolve with the use of AR and VR.

4. Wine cocktails

Cocktails have always been a cult favorite, however, most people enjoy cocktails with spirits. This year looks a little bit different. Consumers seem to be getting more into wine, and into the different things that wine can do. Wine cocktails are going to be under the spotlight in 2020, as bartenders are set to try new mixes with wine, and see what consumers are loving. So if you have a versatile wine that could be mixed with chasers and other ingredients to create the perfect cocktail, then you’re definitely on the right track for 2020.

5. Enotourism increases

According to DrinksBusinessNews.com, wine drinkers’ interests are piquing more and more towards wine knowledge. Because of their increasing interest in the industry, there’s going to be a significant rise in enotourism this year. People are going to be visiting more vineyards, learn about the different stories, and are going to be learning more about wine as the year goes by. So if you have a vineyard, then we suggest that you get it ready for tourism and open up your doors.
